In-Clinic First Trimester Abortions

First trimester abortion, in-clinic abortion is one of the safest and most common abortion procedures performed in the United States, and our medical team is expertly skilled in providing this vital abortion care. We understand that each patient has different needs and wants every visit to be a positive experience. An in-clinic abortion procedure is a safe, simple procedure and usually lasts between five and 15 minutes. On the day of your surgery, you will be greeted and checked in at the front desk and proceed to the laboratory for a pregnancy test and blood work. You will then have a sonogram to accurately determine the length of your pregnancy. Once we determine how long you have been pregnant, you will meet with a patient counselor to be told about the abortion procedure, anesthesia, post-procedure abortion care, contraception, and how to contact us 24 hours a day following your surgery. We will also schedule an appointment for you to return to the facility in 2-3 weeks for your free post-abortion appointment.

For over quarter of a century, patients have relied on Parkmed NYC’s commitment and dedication to the highest standards of reproduction, abortion, and medical care. Prior to the abortion procedure, you will meet your physician and have an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have. The procedural abortion takes place in one of our modern procedure rooms. You will be attended to by a team of warm, friendly healthcare professionals. Throughout your abortion procedure our anesthesia staff will monitor your vital signs continuously to ensure maximum safety. Our anesthesia staff will insert an intravenous catheter into a vein in your arm or hand for an anesthetic to be administered through. You will be asleep for approximately 3-7 minutes during the abortion procedure. Once asleep, the surgeon will insert a speculum into the vagina so that the cervix can be visualized. The cervix will be gently opened using a series of thin dilators through which a plastic vacurette can be inserted into the uterus. The vacurette is connected to a suction catheter and a controlled light suction is used to remove the pregnancy tissue.

Following the abortion procedure, you will wake up and will rest in our recovery room where a nurse will monitor your vital signs. Once you are awake, alert, and feeling well, we will offer you something light to eat and you will be discharged in the company of your escort. Remember, it is imperative that you have someone with you to accompany you to your home. It is not safe for you to leave the facility after having anesthesia without an escort. You will be instructed not to insert anything into your vagina for two weeks following your abortion procedure. This includes tampons, sexual intercourse, and douching. Also, please refrain from using any medication that contains aspirin; it is a blood thinner and can cause an increase in your bleeding. You will receive a discharge information packet that includes our 24-hour contact number and will highlight information about what to expect following your procedure. You will also receive several prescriptions; one is an antibiotic, and the other is a medication that helps to contract your uterus so that it can return to its pre-pregnant size. Please note that we have nurses on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week and can answer any questions that might arise following the procedure.

Aspiration Abortion Services

The aspiration procedure is available to end early pregnancy using a handheld plastic instrument in order to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. For the aspiration procedure, your cervix will be numbed, and a thin tube will be used to remove the pregnancy. This procedure takes approximately 2-3 minutes and cramping that usually follows this procedure can be relieved by Motrin and/or Tylenol. We are highly experienced in performing safe abortions and have been providing care since 1971. Patients and their doctors put their trust in us—you can too.

Gynecological surgery and procedural abortion can be performed with several different methods of anesthesia, including local anesthesia, sedation, “twilight sleep,” general anesthesia, topical anesthesia, as well as with a combination of methods. Our board-certified anesthesiologists are trained to deliver and assist in all methods of anesthesia and will tailor your experience to be as safe and pain-free as possible. You and your physician can review all your options to make the choice of anesthesia that is best and safest for you.

Abortion procedures can be performed without general anesthesia at the patient’s request. If this method of abortion is the desired and safest abortion option, you will have the option of receiving local anesthesia, twilight, or conscious sedation for your abortion procedure.

Abortion Pill
an alternative to surgical abortion that may be appropriate for some Patients.

Medical abortion (the abortion pill) is an alternative to procedural abortion (surgical abortion) that may be appropriate for some patients. In a Procedural (surgical abortion), the pregnancy is removed by suction curettage. In a Medication abortion (medical abortion), a pill is used to stop the growth of the pregnancy. 24-36 hours later, pills are placed in the mouth and allowed to dissolve. These pills cause the pregnancy to miscarry. Thousands of patients have used this method in clinical trials, and there have been no reports of significant side-effects or long-term risks. The medication abortion method has a success rate of 95% or greater when given before 10 weeks of pregnancy. Complications are rare, but they do happen. If you think you have a medical emergency, it is very important that you contact us as soon as possible. Please do not delay contacting us if you have any of the following symptoms: excessive bleeding; severe pain not reduced by rest, continued vomiting (unable to keep anything down) for more than 4-6 hours; or fever greater than 101°F. If the pregnancy tissue does not pass completely and there is continuous excessive bleeding, removal via suction may be necessary. We are available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week on our facility number.
