What is Laborless Abortion®?

A Laborless Abortion® is a patient-centered procedure for second trimester or later abortion which eliminates the experience of strong labor pains and vaginal delivery. This innovative D&E method otherwise technically known as Laborless D&E® is designed to provide a more compassionate and efficient alternative for patients facing the difficult decision of induction abortion later in pregnancy.

A Laborless Abortion® is a D&E procedure that avoids intense labor pain associated with second trimester and later induction abortion., This procedure is completed in just two visits (over 24 hours), rather than the traditional 3 to 4 days required for other methods. It is performed under sedation (sleep) anesthesia, ensuring the greatest level of comfort possible for the patient.

What is the difference between and Laborless D&E® and Laborless Abortion®?

Laborless D&E® is a technical medical name for Laborless Abortion®.

A Laborless Abortion® is when a Laborless D&E® procedure is performed which avoids intense labor pain associated with second trimester and later induction abortion as the procedure is performed under sedation (sleep) anesthesia.

How is a Laborless Abortion® performed?

Laborless Abortion® otherwise medically known as Laborless D&E® is a 2 day procedure. On day one the patient has an ultrasound, lab work and counseling session which includes the expected treatment plan. While under sedation anesthesia an intrauterine injection is performed and laminaria (a treatment to promote dilation) are placed in the cervix. This causes minimal discomfort and the patient can leave after approximately 45 minutes. Patients are advised they can eat and drink normally until midnight. The patient returns early the following day and is assessed for readiness of procedure completion and then has the Abortion under sedation/ (sleep) anesthesia. Laborless Abortion® can achieve completion Even later in pregnancy, in only two days.

What if the patient has previous caesarean section(s) and/or myomectomy scars?

A Laborless Abortion® is particularly of benefit for these patients in order to minimize, if not, avoid risk of uterine scar rupture which is associated with traditional induction abortion procedure. A Laborless Abortion® is always performed by a Board-Certified physician specialist at Parkmed NYC. These specialists have safely completed procedures complicated by multiple c-sections, myomectomy scar tissue and complex medical issues. All patients will be evaluated by our Board-Certified Physicians for the procedure at Parkmed NYC regardless of a complex medical history.

We will honor and accommodate a patient’s request for an induction abortion. At Parkmed NYC, an induction abortion is also completed in two days regardless of gestational age. The Parkmed NYC induction protocol includes an ultrasound, lab work and counseling, the patient–under sedation– receives an intrauterine injection and laminaria (a treatment to promote dilation) in the cervix. Are there any specific conditions where Laborless Abortion® is preferred over traditional induction methods?

The Laborless D&E® uses the methods of the second trimester abortion on later gestational ages–it substitutes the shorter, more comfortable D&E for the long labor induction typically used in multiple day of induction in other outpatient clinics.

What are the long term outcomes for women who undergo Laborless D&E®?

Abortion, even at later gestational ages, is a safe procedure. Laborless D&E does not impair a woman’s ability to get pregnant, carry a pregnancy to term, have a vaginal birth or cause pregnancy complications. Abortion in general, has not been shown to cause preterm labor or birth or any other issues in future pregnancies.

Do all abortion facilities offer Laborless Abortion®?

No, many abortion facilities cannot care for patients after 14 weeks of pregnancy.

Many others do not offer sedation. At Parkmed NYC, the patient has a choice of local (awake) anesthetic, or sedation (sleep) anesthesia.

Many can only offer a lengthy induction for advanced pregnancies rather than the 2 day Laborless D&E®.
