Liletta is an intrauterine device (IUD) that a medical professional inserts into the uterus to prevent conception. In several groups of women of reproductive age, Liletta has been shown to be more than 99% effective in preventing pregnancy for up to 6 years. Women who have had children and those who have never been pregnant can both use it. Your doctor can take Liletta out at any time because it is a form of reversible birth control. When Liletta is put into the uterus, it progressively distributes 52 mg of the progestin hormone levonorgestrel. Liletta is a tiny, flexible, T-shaped device made of plastic. The hormone in question is the same kind that is frequently found in birth control tablets. Your blood only absorbs a modest amount of levonorgestrel at a time. Estrogen is not present in Liletta.

Liletta may work in several ways, including:

• Thickening cervical mucus
• Inhibiting sperm movement
• Reducing sperm survival
• Thinning the lining of the uterus

It is not known exactly how these actions work together to prevent pregnancy.

You must discuss your health and other personal factors with your healthcare practitioner before deciding on Liletta. Insertion of a Liletta IUD can be done during a typical office appointment.

Pain, bleeding, or dizziness are frequent adverse reactions both during and after insertion. There are a few important things to remember after Liletta insertion, like how to verify if Liletta is in place and when to notify your healthcare practitioner about Liletta. Contact your healthcare professional right away if your side effects get worse or last for more than 30 minutes. It’s possible that Liletta wasn’t positioned properly, or there could be signs of expulsion or perforation. You could become pregnant as soon as Liletta is removed, so you should use another method of birth control if you do not want to become pregnant. Talk to your healthcare provider about the best birth control methods for you, because your new method may need to be started 7 days before Liletta is removed to prevent pregnancy.

What if I change my mind about birth control and want to become pregnant in less than 6 years?

Your healthcare provider can remove Liletta at any time. You could become pregnant as soon as Liletta is removed. About 6 out of 7 women who want to become pregnant will become pregnant sometime in the first year after Liletta is removed.

Can I have an MRI with Liletta in place?

Liletta is MRI Safe. Liletta should not interfere with imaging.
